As you know my name is Laura Boucher. If you are on my website, you probably have noticed that I’m a Doula. But did you also know I’m a babywearing educator as well. I help teach parents, grandparents, and childcare providers how to safely use all types of carriers. I also help a lot of people figure out what type of carrier will best suit their needs.

I started my babywearing journey when my first son was around 3 months old. I’m so thankful to have been exposed to babywearing and to have been able to find the amazing babywearing community that comes along with it.

Babywearing is great for not only parents but relatives or other care givers. It’s a fantastic way to start building a bond with a child whether they are a newborn, toddler or older.

Personally, I find babywearing really beneficial with newborns. Babywearing creates an easy solution for skin-to-skin time, which is so important in those early days. This way you don’t actually have to be topless (the carrier will cover you both) and you can move around more easily. To me this was a big win if you had people over or you wanted your windows open to the world.

Babywearing is also a life saver when you have a newborn and older more active children. Your baby can safely snuggle or nap in the carrier while you play with your older children. Plus, if you're breastfeeding this can be done quite easily without even having to take your child out of the carrier. On that topic, I will say it does take a bit of practice to breastfeed successfully in a carrier. If it doesn’t go perfectly the first couple times you try don’t get discouraged as it does take practice.

If you're in the Edmonton area like myself, I highly recommend joining the Edmonton babywearing group on Facebook. It is a great community of mothers and the occasional father. They are super helpful if you have questions and there are a ton of meet ups. The meet ups are also a great way to make mommy connections and an excuse to get out of the house. If you happen to be from out-of-town check for a similar group in your city or nearest one.
